Seeing as how it’s Mother’s Day, I asked my lovely wife Amy a question this morning to try and do something special for the mother of our three children: Who would you say is your favorite classic jazz musician?
Amy comes from a musical background. Her father’s a musician who taught music in schools for many years, and at the age of 84 he still leads two bands — a concert band and a professional jazz band which takes him on the road quite a bit, even to this day.
Amy has surely been blessed with her father’s love for music, and she has a gift for teaching it herself. Like her father, she’s a big fan of classic jazz. But getting her to name a favorite is tough.
She did manage to come up with a name after I asked her, though: Natalie Cole. Okay, Natalie might be considered by some as more “pop” than classic jazz, but when you carry the bloodline of Natalie Cole it’s hard to argue too terribly much.
To honor Amy and the legacy passed along to her by her “pop,” I’ll work on this Mother’s Day with the legacy passed along to Natalie Cole by her “pop,” Nat King Cole.
