Bill Bruford is admired as much for his drumming in straight jazz music as he is for his progressive rock drumming.
It goes without saying, then, that with that mix his jazz-fusion drumming comes … naturally.
When Bruford would switch between more of the classic, chamber-style jazz and jazz-fusion, the lines were amazingly clear. For classic jazz, he’d employ more of an acoustic bass and brass, and he’d use his tuned electronic drums more like a keyboard. You’d be hard-pressed to find a six-string guitar.
For jazz-fusion, he employed some masters of electric guitar, electric bass, and keys with an occasional horn chiming in.
For classic jazz, the group was known as Earthworks. For fusion, it was mostly known by one name — Bruford.
