For the jazz-fusion portion of my “ladies’ week” playlist exercise, I’ll go to a performer that I’d pretty much forgotten about until the name was mentioned to me recently:  Gayle Moran.

Shame on me.

It had been a while since I’d even seen or heard her name, let alone listened to her music.  Out of sight, out of mind.  I was glad for the reminder.

Whether it’s been with the Mahavishnu Orchestra on the “Apocalypse” or “Visions of the Emerald Beyond” albums, or with Return To Forever on “Musicmagic,” or on a few albums with her husband — jazz-fusion keyboard great Chick Corea — Gayle Moran has been a big part of the fusion movement with her own keyboard playing, but also with her classic voice that sounds wonderful in a jazz group or in a classical string ensemble.

Listening to her keyboard playing alone could be enough to give her recognition in the fusion world.  Her voice — that ethereal, classic voice — seals the deal.
